True story. A 6 year old looked right at me and completely deadpan said:
You look like you used to be pretty, Ms. Katie.
USED TO??
I don’t even know what hurt more — the past tense, the unshakable confidence, or the fact that this was coming from someone with ketchup on their forehead.
So I did what any mature adult would do. I smiled sweetly, said “thank you,” and cried in the car on the way home.
This is what it’s like talking to kids. No filter. No warning. Just brutal, unprompted truth bombs.
One second, they’re hugging you and telling you you’re the best person in the world. The next, they’re absolutely obliterating your self-esteem with a single sentence. And right after that, they’re asking you if fish have dreams.
It’s a wild ride. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m Katie, a teacher and mama who is constantly learning (and messing up) as I strive to decode the minds of young humans.
I’ve spent years figuring out how to get kids to listen without bribing, threatening, yelling, or totally losing my mind. I’m here to share what actually works (and what doesn’t), and all my wins and disasters along the way.
So if you’ve ever:
had a toddler ask you why 47 times
lost a power struggle with a second grader
been asked a question so deep that you just stood there, blinking
been emotionally wrecked by a tween’s brutal honesty
wanted to actually connect with your kids, not just manage them
…then you’re in the right place.
I don’t have all the answers. But I do have some, and the rest we’ll figure out together.
So subscribe. It’s free. It’s fun. And unlike your last conversation with a toddler, it will not end in total exhaustion.
Oh, and be sure to follow me on Instagram @kidtalk.co, where I post even more about all the weird, wonderful, and WTF moments that come with talking to kids.
Hit subscribe. Stick around. Let’s figure this out together. I’m glad you’re here!
